Several months ago, the great folks at Magformers sent us two of their magnetic construction sets for review. They were a huge hit with our kids!

Have you heard of Magformers before? These award-winning construction sets are colorful, sturdy, magnetic plastic shapes that can be used to create amazing 3D structures including geometric shapes, buildings, and even a moving car!

They come in tons of different shapes and sizes, squares, triangles, pentagons, rectangles and more. The magnets are strong enough to build whatever comes to your child’s imagination while exploring the power of science.

My son would pull a Godzilla and destroy this within seconds. This is an example of an elaborate construction using Magformers.

After some research waiting for our sets to arrive, I discovered that many teachers say that Magformers are the most popular toy in their classroom, and lots of parents claim that their kids favorite toy are these magnetic blocks. Hop on and read the reviews for yourself! At the time of this review, this Magformer set has 477 reviews with an average rating of 4.8/5.

Do we agree? Lets put them to the test!

The two sets we received for review were:

Magformers Wow 27-piece set with/ 2 wheels
Magformers 44-piece set

My children, aged 2 and 4 were the official DadGab testers. Upon opening the boxes, my 4.5 year old daughter was immediately building all sorts of cool 3D shapes. While my son isn’t quite at that level, he did enjoy stacking and pulling the pieces apart, as well as helping out sister with placement of some pieces.

My son enjoying stacking the shapes together!

It was amazing how strong the magnets are and how secure the pieces are once they snapped into place. The pieces never reject on the edge, even if you flip pieces over they still work. The magnets are completely encapsulated in the plastic, so these are very safe for all ages to play with. Unlike other construction sets, you don’t have to worry about any small pieces being inadvertently swallowed by young children.

The plastic is very durable and not one Magformer piece was broken during our playtimpeicee, even with a 2-year-old boy at play.

The pieces are very easy for the kids to play with. Each set comes with a booklet that shows pictures and diagrams of various constructions, from cars to funky shapes. I love toys like this as it encourages kids to create and use their imaginations. The possibilities are endless. Magformers  truly accommodates a kids desire to build and design.

My daughter was very proud of every object and shape she created. She kept saying “I wonder what happens when I put this here…..”.

We did it! The finished product!

The important planning stage

It was great watching the kids discover what they could make by putting different combinations of shapes together.

Ta-Da! A flying thingamajig courtesy of my daughters imagination.

Experimenting with shapes and designs!

My son is really into tractors, so we decided we give it a shot and try to build one! My daughter took the lead, and with the help of her brother (and dad) built something that resembled a ‘tractor’, complete with a functioning front bucket (though it didn’t last when it collided with a Tonka).

It’s no John Deere but it does resemble a tractor (or plow)

We can see why Magformers are so well-loved by kids, parents and educators, and why they’ve won many awards. In 2007 they received the Openheim Toy Porfolio Platinum Award and were awarded the BEST TOY FOR KIDS award in 2009 and 2010 from Astra (American Specialty Toy Retailing Association).

In all, we really love our sets and the kids really enjoyed doing this Magformer review! They’re durable,  fun and educational!  The pieces easily snap into place and the building possibilities are as endless as your child’s imagination.

If you’re looking to surprise your kids or classroom with an exciting new toy this year, Magformers won’t disappoint!
